Mental Health Professionals are the ones taking care of us. But….who is taking care of them?
Just like the front line healthcare workers (myself included) mental health professionals did not shut down during the pandemic. They were just ramping up for additional case loads that were unprecedented and hard to get a handle on. Just trying to make an appointment with one of them is exasperating and requires being on a wait list or waiting months to be seen. These beautiful mental health professionals are taking on all the extra load and stress during COVID pandemic. They have counseled countless people regarding their stress, anxiety and depression (just to name a few) while they too have their own fears about what was going on and how to handle it all.
They have counseled people during COVID outbreaks, with telehealth visits with family in the background—offering no privacy or respite, during racial unrest and outbreaks, during the presidential election. This has been the most polarizing year I have seen in my lifetime just concerning the above-mentioned issues. Most mental health professionals have experienced symptoms of burnout, are suffering and frustrated themselves. Their caseloads are overwhelming. Besides the additional stress, anxiety and depression that has risen due to the pandemic, they are also taking heavier caseloads with patients experiencing trauma and suicidal ideation. There is also a certain disconnect between therapist and their clients when forced to use telehealth services. Most of these professionals have reported feelings of guilt and helplessness. Not being prepared by education to prepare for a pandemic and the mental health concerns related. Some therapists have shared that they are going through some of the same stress that their patients are going through as well. For many, they are speaking with clients whose loved ones are in the hospital with COVID and they are trying to give hope and peace to a population that is frozen in fear. Many of our mental health professionals do work in hospitals and have continued to work with people face to face. They have had to face their own fears of coming in contact with COVID.
Emotional exhaustion is a very real feeling that happens when stress is prolonged and there is no time to recover. The mental health professionals are extremely vulnerable to this because they cannot walk away from their caseloads and they care so deeply about their clients and their mental well-being.
