Can Reiki help with Fibromyalgia?
Treating fibromyalgia has been studied all over and you can read the reports from institutions like Mayo Clinic, International Journal of Health Sciences and Research, Cleveland Clinic, Beaumont, National Institute of Health (NIH), National Fibromyalgia Association (NFA), to name a few.
There is HOPE! Much of the research shows that Reiki can help to reduce pain, anxiety, depression and support quality of life. This has led patients with fibromyalgia to reduce their medication or eliminate it altogether.
Millions of people who have fibromyalgia, are looking in many different places to find help to reduce pain, anxiety, depression and fatigue. Medication and counseling/therapy are the 2 main prescriptions given to those who suffer. As an RN, I consistently ask my patients if it is working. They usually all respond the same: "a little" or "not at all". To me, this is so sad that we cant figure this out or offer more. I was so excited to learn that Reiki can help! I just wanted to run out of the house and tell everybody! I share that information with anyone or my patients who are not getting good results or relief. I encourage them to give Reiki a try. I want the world to know that Reiki has been proven to help reduce pain. It may take several visits or it could happen in one. Of course, the more you use Reiki the more added benefit to your life.
Martha Lacy, MD hematologist at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, who is also a Reiki master states that “Reiki is used for pain control, relaxation, and stress relief. It almost always provides clients with some benefit. People get very relaxed and can also experience pain relief..."
How Does Reiki Work?
Typically, a fibromyalgia patient has repeated nerve stimulation that causes neurotransmitters to signal pain throughout the body causing you to be more aware of pain. Fibromyalgia patients often feel pain all over their bodies. Sometimes a gentle touch is too much for them to bare.
Reiki is a Japanese therapy that uses universal energy. Rei = universal and ki =life force energy. This energy flows through the body and goes to the location it is needed for healing and relief. Reiki is a very relaxing therapy that can either put you in a drowsy state or you may fall asleep. With my clients, I typically don't even place a sheet over them if they are this sensitive and I almost never use light touch, but will use a no-touch method of reiki therapy. Typical fibromyalgia patients come into their therapy session with pain levels of 6-8 and leave with levels of 2-3. Repeated sessions may be needed but they will almost always have some relief.
